I think it is easy for her readers to feel strongly about her characters, whether that is like or hate. Hillier writes great characters that are well-fleshed out. What I love more than a typical mystery or thriller is one that has fully-developed characters. I personally thought that ending was incredibly satisfying and fitting. Hillier also creates several mysteries within the tale that will keep you reading.

You follow Paris at several points in her life. Multiple timelines are used to build the breadth of the story. Things We Do in the Dark has a strong plot with a lot of depth. While I would not necessarily say Things We Do in the Dark is a heart-racing thriller, it is a good story you will want to plan on reading in one sitting. When Paris’s celebrity husband is murdered, she is the prime suspect which also makes her vulnerable to her past being exposed. Things We Do in the Dark is a dark and suspenseful novel that follows the life of Paris Peralta in all her iterations. I love a great author getting broader exposure. I was even more excited to find out that Things We Do in the Dark is going to be a June Book of the Month selection. Naturally, I was excited to see that she is publishing a book in July. Reyes knows who Paris really is, and when she’s unexpectedly released from prison, she threatens to expose all of Paris’s secrets. Twenty-five years earlier, Ruby Reyes, known as the Ice Queen, was convicted of a similar murder in a trial that riveted Canada in the early nineties. With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it’s only a matter of time before someone from her long hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she’s worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future. But as bad as this looks, it’s not what worries her the most. When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom―covered in blood, holding a straight razor, her celebrity husband dead in the bathtub behind her―she knows she’ll be charged with murder. Paris Peralta is suspected of killing her celebrity husband, and her long-hidden past now threatens to destroy her future.
